Today, digestive conditions are growing in prevalence with more and more people at risk of developing serious complications if left untreated. At the Gastroenterology Center, we focus on the digestive system and illnesses associated with the esophagus, stomach, liver, intestines, and colon. Some common conditions include Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, dyspepsia, constipation, diarrhea, hepatitis, and gastrointestinal and liver cancer.
At the center, we strive to provide patients with personalized compassionate and timely care utilizing advanced procedures such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy to diagnose gastrointestinal conditions. Prompt diagnosis is pivotal and can help to prevent complications as GI diseases often affect other bodily functions. Depending on the nature of the condition, treatment may range from a change in lifestyle (such as nutrition) to surgery. Furthermore, a majority of GI services are provided on an outpatient basis, meaning patients can expect to return home on the same day.
During the investigation, your doctor may need to take some tissue sample (biopsies) from the lining of your upper digestive tract for analysis (this is painless). The samples will then be retained and a video recording and/ or photographs may be taken.
The instrument used in this investigation is called a colonoscopy and is flexible. As with the gastroscopy there is an illumination channel, which enables light to be directed onto the lining of your bowel, and another which relays pictures back, onto a screen. This enables the endoscopist to have a clear view and to check whether or not disease or inflammation is present. During the investigations the endoscopist may need to take some samples from the lining of your colon for analysis, this process is painless.
